You are on a desert island and you are lost. There is very little to eat on the island but you manage to find five kinds of grasshopper. Luckily you have a book on insects which explains that only one type of grasshopper, the earth-hopper, is in fact edible (commestibile), the others are all deadly poisonous. Which of these five insects is the earth-hopper and when are you most likely to catch it?
The grasshoppers on this island can be identified by their size, their colour and by the length of their antennae. Both the sand-hopper and the bush-hopper have bodies that are longer than their antennae. All the other kinds have bodies which are shorter than their antennae.
The bush-hopper and the long-hopper both jump long distances but they are smaller than any of the other grasshoppers.
The sand-hopper and the digging-hopper are green and come out at midday. The other grasshoppers, which are either black or brown, come out in the evening.
Only the earth-hopper can be eaten, all the other kinds of grasshopper are poisonous.
